Peacock Feather Wreath

Some girls are lucky enough to have a husband who brings them home flowers or jewelry or chocolate or sweet things. Not my husband. Oh no. He has to get all inventive and stuff and decides to bless me with a big old bunch of peacock feathers. Now mind you, I’ve never in my life said, “Oh, honey, I’d love to have some peacock feathers!” Ummm, how ’bout no.

But, when life hands you lemons, you make a peacock feather wreath. Or something like that.

Peacock Feather Wreath

I didn’t have this epiphany directly upon receipt of the “gift.” Honestly? I was a little weirded out by the fact that they were real feathers, from like a real farm. So they went into a garbage bag where they stayed for almost 2 months before I could figure out what in the Sam Hill to do with the darn things.

“Oh, I could make a wreath out of that!” is never, ever, ever the first thought that comes to mind when I see anything. I’m kind of a wreath wreck.

After a lot of thinking, more failed attempts than I care to admit, and a little (teeny, tiny, huge) breakdown later, I had a wreath.
wreath tutorial

Besides the feathers, I had to find a wire wreath form (which was sold out at 2 out of 3 stores I went to – what’s up with that?!?) I also needed some floral wire, so besides the feathers I spent about $3 – not too bad, I’d say.

Because I did it wrong 99 ways before getting to the right method, I can tell you that photos are scarce. But, you want to start by keeping your wire on the spool and wrapping the end onto the wreath form to give you a secure starting point.

Snipping off the ends of the feathers where the black fringey part ends was the key to getting it looking somewhat neatish. Then I gathered 3 or 4, put them on the form, wrapped the wire, a few times, then pulled the feathers around the form and kept going. I’d wrap a bit, add a few more feathers, wrap more, add feathers, until I got all the way around the wreath form.

Peacock Wreath

Too many more and it might have looked like a juju hat gone wrong. So let’s stick with the peacock feather wreath gone right.

Are you feeling fallish yet?

Wow, that is awesome. And here I’m thinking I’m all inventive because I have a peacock feather in a cool jar with a bunch of craft-store twigs. Silly me. I love the way this turned out & nice that you got your feathers free. I don’t know if I’d PAY for that many — I don’t think it would be a budget wreath by any means! ;D

Are they expensive? See, I don’t even know a blessing in disguise when I see it!

They aren’t too expensive. It’s cool that you got them for free locally, though!
I was searching and found on Amazon you can get 30 for less than $6 shipped. Not bad.

So you could still make it for under $10 – that’s pretty good, right? Thanks for doing the super sleuthing!

Love it!!! Yes, I believe peacock feathers are expensive, but that is still a lot of bang for your buck. I think a peacock wreath may be in my future! Thanks!

I didn’t use to love peacock feathers. My Grandma had actual peacocks on her farm and would always pick up their feathers and keep them in a big vase. So now when I see them it reminds me of her and I love them! I also love your wreath! Very thoughtful husband 🙂

Oh but peacock is so trendy! You would’ve been absolutely forced to do SOMETHING with them. haha. I’m completely drawn in by how “not orderly” (I guess is how I’d describe it) it is. I like that it’s a bit funky and unruly. Almost makes it ultra chic, ya know?

My Mom used to have a bunch of peacock feathers in a vase in our home when I was growing up, and I never thought much about it until lately. I think I need a little pop of peacock feathers for Fall!! I have had this pinned for about a year! I finally found some feathers from a local girl who has a peacock farm. I got 100 feathers for $25 dollars. I was thrilled. I can’t wait to make a wreath.
