Make This: Mason Jar Ornament

A mason jar ornament was one of those ideas that are almost so simple you wonder why you didn’t think of it sooner. But honestly, I didn’t think of it. My teenage daughter wanted something fun to put in little gifts for her friends and she came up with this idea. It turned out to be so cute that I decided to share with y’all (because that’s what friends are for, right?)

Make This: Mason Jar Ornament Craft

Supplies:

  • Small glass jars with metal lid
  • 1 inch wide ribbon or fabric strips
  • Drill with 3/8 inch bit
  • Small piece of scrap wood
  • Scissors
  • Items to fill jars

Start with the glass jar. This particular jar came from Target’s dollar spot, but you can find similar ones at any craft store. (I looked on Amazon to no avail.)

Remove the lid from the jar and place it upside down on the piece of scrap wood. Using a drill with a 3/8 inch bit, hold the lid down firmly and drill a hole in the center of the lid.

Next you’ll need a piece of ribbon or fabric strip. I used a 1 inch wide scrap of fabric about 10 inches long.

Fold the ribbon in half long way, then fold over the top of the center to create a point in the middle of the ribbon/fabric.

Use the point to thread the ribbon through the hole, pulling it through to have enough space to create the loop, but leaving the ends one the bottom of the lid.

Tie a knot in the ribbon/fabric and trim off the excess with a pair of scissors.

Once your jar is filled, replace the lid and gift to friends. This mason jar ornament makes a great teen gift when filled with nail polish, lip balm, etc. – or you could put in small cars – or jelly beans – the sky is the limit as long as it will fit in the jar!
