Bulls Heat Up in Second Half of Season-Opening Win

13 Dec 2021 | 16:43 | Basketball

TAMPA, NOV. 25, 2020 – David Collins produced right away with a team-high 17 points and USF men’s basketball took control in the second half of a 94-84 home win over Florida College on Wednesday to start the 2020-21 season presented by Tampa General Hospital.

Collins went 6-for-10 from the field and added five assists and three steals in the first game in eight months for the eager Bulls. The senior guard from Youngstown, Ohio heated up with 10 points in the second half after Florida College (5-4) took a 46-42 lead into the break.

Senior guard/forward Justin Brown (Atlanta) scored 13 of his 15 total points in the second half, when he went 3-for-4 from long range. Brown’s hot hand helped the Bulls outscore Florida College, 52-38, in the final 20 minutes.

Shooting 5-for-7 from the field, sophomore guard Jamir Chaplin (Norcross, Ga.) set career highs with 14 points and team-leading seven rebounds. Junior center Michael Durr (Atlanta) joined three other Bulls in double figures with 11 points.

Redshirt junior forward Alexis Yetna (Paris) had an impressive return to action with nine points, including a pair of three-pointers, and four rebounds in 12 minutes. The 2019 AAC Freshman of the Year missed all of last season with a knee injury.

Fourth-year head coach Brian Gregory showcased USF’s depth with 11 players seeing action and nine different Bulls scoring. Freshman guard Caleb Murphy (Youngstown, Ohio) had a game-high seven assists, five points and four rebounds in his collegiate debut.

Quotable
Head coach Brian Gregory on the season-opening victory:
“One of the things we talked about was we needed to play. It was clearly evident, especially in that first half. We played much better in the second half. We played a lot of guys. We’ve played some guys who haven’t played before or played in that system before. We got some good basketball stretches from some guys and give Florida College a lot of credit. They’re well-coached. They’ve played nine games, so their execution was pretty good.”

Gregory on the trip to Mohegan Sun Arena to face Rhode Island and Virginia Tech over the weekend:
“Obviously, we’re gonna get tested early… We’re gonna face, in terms of the NET rankings, probably two top-50 teams on Saturday and Sunday. We’re gonna have to play well. We’re gonna have to kind of dig down a little deeper on the defensive end and on the rebounding. It’s gonna be good for us.”

About USF Men’s Basketball
The USF men’s basketball team is led by head coach Brian Gregory. On March 22, 2017, Gregory was introduced as the 10th head coach in program history. He previously led programs at Georgia Tech (2011-16) and Dayton (2003-11). Gregory spent nearly a decade as an assistant coach under Michigan State’s Hall of Fame head coach Tom Izzo and helped the Spartans win the 2000 NCAA National Championship. Gregory owns nearly 300 career head coaching wins and six postseason appearances, including the 2010 NIT Championship. In his second season at the helm of the Bulls, Gregory led the team to the best win turnaround in the NCAA, the most single-season wins in school history and the 2019 College Basketball Invitational championship.

USF has retired three numbers in its 47-year history: Chucky Atkins (12), Charlie Bradley (30) and Radenko Dobras (31). The Bulls have earned three NCAA tournament bids, appeared in the NIT eight times and won the 2019 College Basketball Invitational.
