Rafael da Silva has revealed about an unexpected phone call from Cristiano Ronaldo before he and Fabio da Silva moved to Manchester United.
The full-back duo had been watched by the club for years as they showed qualities in Fluminense’s youth team, and the two eventually agreed to move to Old Trafford in February 2007. A move to a new club. Big teams at a young age is difficult, but Ronaldo has contributed to convince them.
Rafael told UTD Podcast: ” He called into my phone and I will never forget it. My phone indicated an international call and I said ‘Who is this? I never picked up. get a call like this’.”
“He just said: ‘Ah, [Portuguese greeting]! It’s raining here, here it’s raining, in Manchester, you know. I’m calling to tell you: sign a contract with Manchester United . I know you’re going to like this team ‘, and so on.”
“I can’t believe it. It’s amazing.”
The twins later signed professional contracts at United, and quickly rose to prominence under Sir Alex Ferguson. In total, they made 226 appearances for the club, scoring eight goals.
In April 2012, Sir Alex Ferguson announced that to provide Fabio with first-team experience that Manchester United could not provide at the time, Fabio was loaned to QPR, leaving in 2014 for full, while Rafael also left in 2015.
