Six games were scheduled for the night in the NBA, and they notably saw Golden State strike a big blow by going to win in Utah. For the second time in two days, DeMar DeRozan managed a buzzer-beater for Chicago, as Brooklyn lost at home to the Clippers.
Poster of the night: Utah – Golden State
Utah had the opportunity to come back half a game from Golden State to the top of the Western Conference, it was missed. The Jazz lost 116-123 against the Warriors after a meeting that kept all its promises. The Californians led for much of that game and were sixteen points clear at the start of the third quarter. But Utah, who only played the game with eight players, managed to come back little by little and even to pass in front 17 minutes from the end (75-74). The Salt Lake City players remained in the lead until 6’16 from the buzzer, when Stephen Curry put the two teams tied (101-101).There was a further tie at 111-111 at 2’13 to go, and that’s when the Warriors stepped up, with five points from Curry, and a 3-point shot from Andre Iguodala ( 112-119) to widen the gap. Rudy Gobert tried to bring his team back with two dunks (116-120), but Curry’s three free throws sealed the victory for the Warriors, more than ever leaders in the West. The 3-point shooting record holder finished with 28 points, Andrew Wiggins 25 and Otto Porter Jr 20. On the Jazz side, there are four to finish with 20 points: Bojan Bogdanovic, Rudy Gobert, Donovan Mitchell and Jordan Clarkson.
MVP of the night: DeMar DeRozan
Incredible New Year for DeMar DeRozan! The Chicago back (or winger) has just offered his team victory two nights in a row thanks to buzzer-beaters! After helping the Bulls 106-108 in Indiana on December 31, the former Toronto star did the same on January 1, and Chicago won 119-120 in Washington! While Kyle Kuzma had just given the advantage to the Wizards with four seconds remaining by scoring with three points (119-117), DeRozan inherited the ball in the left corner, defeated Corey Kispert then Bradley Beal and scored three points! And it’s a seventh victory for Chicago (the Bulls’ longest streak in seven years), which takes the lead in the Eastern Conference! “It’s great, especially doing it outside. I don’t know if I dreamed of it, but it’s real anyway. I was very careful that my feet were behind the line, ”said after the match the first player to sign two buzzer-beaters in 24 hours. DeRozan finished with 28 points, and this winning shot was the only 3-point shot he attempted in the entire game. Zach LaVine ends up with 35 points (27pts, 17bp for Beal Washington side) and Chicago is starting to be more and more afraid.
The flop of the night: Brooklyn
Eleventh loss of the season for Brooklyn, who is no longer the leader of the Eastern Conference. The Nets lost 116-120 at home against the Clippers, sixth in the West and yet deprived of Paul George, Ivica Zubac, Luke Kennard or Nicolas Batum (and of course Kawhi Leonard). Carried by a James Harden in triple-double (34pts, 12rbds, 13pts), Brooklyn dominated most of the game after being down ten points in the first quarter. But the Clippers, led by thirteen points at 5’57 from the end (105-92) managed a magnificent end of the game. They first signed a 10-0 (with seven points from Eric Bledsoe, who will finish with 27) to return to 107-105 then equalized at 112-112 at 2’06 from the buzzer. Terance Mann allowed Californians to lead 113-117 with 23 seconds off the buzzer, James Harden gave hope to the Nets (115-117), but the last free throws of Bledsoe and Reggie Jackson gave the victory to the Clippers. Kevin Durant’s 28 points were not enough for the Nets, who disappointed in front of their 17,732 fans and will have to make up for it on Monday against Memphis.
Frenchman of the Night: Rudy Gobert
The French pivot was again excellent in the shock against Golden State, with 20 points (9 out of 10 on shots) and 19 rebounds on the clock. For the eleventh time this season, the Jazz player reached the 20-point mark but that was not enough for Utah to win against the leader. He will try to do even better Monday in New Orleans…
