How to Make Hanging Starfish

Hanging-Starfish-on-Wall

Who’s ready for a quick project? My girl Angie at The Country Chic Cottage, along with Carolina at Moore Craft Time are hosting 2 weeks of 15 minute crafts, and of course I had to do one for her! When I first told her my idea, I thought it might be too simple… but she loved it and so I’m going to share one of my best shop sellers ever – Hanging Starfish. I don’t make these any longer – but still get requests for them – so I hope this tutorial will help!

IMG_5987

Don’t worry – it’s really not a 15 minute project – it’s more like a 15 second project – seriously! You’ll need starfish – any size, any shape, pick your poison. I’ve scoured the internets and the best price and customer service I’ve found is at QualityShells.com.
IMG_5991

You’ll also need some of these little triangle hangers. I got them at Hobby Lobby, about $2 for a pack of 16. Notice that they have a curved bit and a flat side – remember that, m’kay? Oh! and a hot glue gun – don’t forget your trusty hot glue gun!
IMG_6005

Are you ready? It’s really as easy as 1,2,3. First decide which direction you want to hang the starfish – spin it around until you find the “up” side, then flip it over like a pancake.
IMG_6012

Second: you’re ready for the glue. If your starfish has thicker legs, you can put it on a leg. For the smaller starfish, put your glue in the middle. Dry fit the hanger to make sure that it will be hidden behind the starfish to decide where to put your glue dot.

IMG_6014
Third, put the hole in the hanger over the hot glue with the flat side facing down…
IMG_6015
…and use your finger to smush the hanger down and ooze a little of the hot glue through the hole.
Now walk away.
IMG_6017
Well don’t walk too far, because in about 10 seconds it’ll be dry.
Seriously quick stuff!
Hanging-Starfish-on-WallNow hang’em up and enjoy your hanging starfish.

This is a great idea to hot glue hangers to hard to hang items. I’m walking around my house looking at all kinds of things with a new eye for hanging them this way. Thanks!

I’ve also read you can hot glue a thumb tack on the back. Not sure it would handle heavier starfish like knobbies. The hanger approach does seem more secure.

I live “this close” to the seashore and I have added a few nautical pieces to my decor to reflect the beachy ambience and have always wanted to do “something” with starfish besides arranging them in a glass bowl: your project is the perfect solution ~ I can’t wait to do this project.

    THANK YOU for your inspiration!!

I do not have a link for the hardware Michelle, this post is several years old but the hardware was from Hobby Lobby, you can find them at any craft or hardware store though 🙂
