Halloween Crafts: Easy Cheesecloth Ghosts

Now that all my kiddos aren’t so little any more, it’s been quite a few years since we’ve made Halloween crafts that kids would normally enjoy. But this year my 4 year grandson decided that he wanted to make stuff. Lots of stuff. And my step-daughter helped him make lots of fun things to decorate with – but he knows that his GiGi has all sorts of fun things to make stuff with. So we came up with this craft. It’s not necessarily a kids craft, but he did help by cutting fabric (because ghosts need to be wonky and imperfect). Plus he had fun helping play with fluffing the fabric, etc.

Halloween Crafts: Cheesecloth Ghost

Supplies:

empty & clean frappuccino jar
smooth foam ball *
hot glue + gun
cheesecloth
Aleene’s Stiffen Quik spray*
Black permanent marker

First I put a bead of hot glue around the lip of the jar.

Next I put the foam ball on top. Let the glue set up (this only takes a couple of minutes).

Start by cutting your cheesecloth into pieces by draping it over the bottle and finding the length you need to cover completely. I used 5 layers of cheesecloth that was folded in half.

After each layer is put on, spray it Stiffen Quik to dampen, but only the top half. You only want to stiffen up the top half of the foam ball area so the ghost is wispy when dried. I dried each layer lightly with a hair dryer – but you could also let it dry between layers (but that takes 30 minutes to an hour each layer, and I’m an impatient crafter.)

Once it’s all dry, trim off the edges and pull the cheesecloth to fray a bit on the ends. Draw on a face with the marker and you’re done!

Although it’s not something I’d put in a list of Halloween crafts for kids, we really did have fun creating something together. And in the end… that’s the best part!
